Is Feta, mozzarella, halloumi, ricotta, paneer safe in pregnancy?
Generally safe
Yes — these soft cheeses are safe if made from pasteurised milk.
What the evidence says
Soft cheeses that are not mould-ripened, such as Feta, Mozzarella, Halloumi, Ricotta, Paneer, Cottage cheese and cream cheese, are safe in pregnancy provided they are made from pasteurised milk. Check the label — most UK supermarket versions are pasteurised.
Why this matters
Pasteurisation destroys Listeria. These cheeses do not have the mould-ripening process that creates risk in Brie and Camembert.
