Is Kefir safe in pregnancy?
Generally safe
Pasteurised kefir is safe; avoid unpasteurised versions.
What the evidence says
Shop-bought kefir made from pasteurised milk is safe in pregnancy and a useful source of probiotics. Unpasteurised or "raw milk" kefir should be avoided. Water kefir (a different product) is more similar to kombucha — check the label for alcohol content.
Why this matters
Pasteurisation destroys harmful bacteria. Fermentation itself is safe when the starting milk is pasteurised.
