Is Vinegar & pickled foods safe in pregnancy?
Generally safe
Yes — pickled and vinegar foods are safe.
What the evidence says
Vinegar and pickled foods (gherkins, pickled onions, pickled beetroot, commercial sauerkraut) are safe in pregnancy. Commercial fermented sauerkraut and kimchi are typically pasteurised and safe. Raw, fresh, unpasteurised fermented vegetables from specialty shops carry small Listeria risk — check the label or ask.
Why this matters
The acidity of vinegar and the salt in commercial fermented products prevent harmful bacteria. Raw unpasteurised ferments are a small risk.
