Is Calcium supplements safe in pregnancy?

Generally safe

Yes — if you are not getting enough from food.

What the evidence says

Calcium supplements are safe in pregnancy. However, most women getting a few portions of dairy, leafy greens, or fortified plant milks daily will meet their needs from food. Do not take mega-doses. If you follow a vegan diet or avoid dairy, a supplement is often appropriate — ideally discussed with a dietitian or GP.

Why this matters

Calcium is essential for the baby’s bone development. Moderate supplementation is safe; mega-doses can interfere with magnesium and iron absorption.
