Is Folic acid safe in pregnancy?
Generally safe
Yes — 400 micrograms daily from before conception to 12 weeks.
What the evidence says
Folic acid is not only safe in pregnancy but actively recommended. The standard dose is 400 micrograms daily, starting at least one month before conception and through the first 12 weeks. Some women need a higher dose of 5 mg — this is on prescription for women with diabetes, BMI over 30, certain epilepsy medications, or a previous neural tube defect pregnancy.
Why this matters
Folic acid supplementation reduces the risk of neural tube defects like spina bifida by around 70%.
