Is Crab safe in pregnancy?
Generally safe
Yes — cooked crab is safe in pregnancy.
What the evidence says
Thoroughly cooked crab is safe during pregnancy. Avoid the brown meat if possible, as it can accumulate higher levels of cadmium and dioxins. White crab meat is preferred. Raw crab and crab sticks made from uncooked fish should be avoided; most UK shop-bought crab sticks are pre-cooked and therefore fine.
Why this matters
Cooking destroys bacterial risks. The brown meat contains higher pollutant levels than white.
