Is Liquorice (and liquorice root) safe in pregnancy?
Safe with limits
Small amounts in sweets are fine; avoid liquorice root tea or supplements.
What the evidence says
Occasional small amounts of liquorice sweets are generally fine, but pure liquorice root, liquorice root tea, and high-dose liquorice supplements should be avoided. Guidance varies — Finnish research suggests limiting liquorice more strictly.
Why this matters
Glycyrrhizin in liquorice root can affect stress hormones and has been associated in some studies with preterm birth and effects on the baby.
