Is Kippers (smoked herring) safe in pregnancy?
Generally safe
Yes — kippers are safe, especially when cooked.
What the evidence says
Kippers are safe in pregnancy. Traditionally they are cold-smoked, which falls under the updated NHS guidance on smoked fish — generally safe from UK suppliers. Hot kippers (grilled or poached) are always fine.
Why this matters
Herring has low mercury. Cooking eliminates any residual smoking-related risk.
