Is Probiotics safe in pregnancy?

Generally safe

Yes — probiotic foods and most supplements are safe.

What the evidence says

Probiotic foods (yoghurt, kefir made from pasteurised milk, sauerkraut, kimchi) are safe in pregnancy. Probiotic supplements with well-studied strains (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium) are also considered safe. If you have a weakened immune system, discuss with your GP first.

Why this matters

Research on probiotics in pregnancy has generally shown safety, with some evidence of benefit for digestive comfort and possibly reduced pre-eclampsia risk.
