Is Seaweed / nori / kelp safe in pregnancy?
Safe with limits
Small amounts fine; large amounts can give too much iodine.
What the evidence says
Seaweed in small amounts (e.g. the nori wrap around sushi, a sprinkle of wakame in soup) is safe. Large amounts of seaweed, especially kelp or kombu, can provide excessive iodine, which can affect thyroid function and the baby. Avoid kelp supplements entirely.
Why this matters
Seaweed is very high in iodine. Small amounts contribute positively to iodine needs; large amounts or supplements can exceed the safe upper limit.
